Who Is the
Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)?
Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)?
An Open Table/Holy Communion:
We practice unity and inclusion at the Lord’s Table for the sake of mission and for the sake of the world as the one family of God. Most congregations do this by celebrating communion every Sunday. That’s why we use a chalice as our logo. All are welcome to the Lord's Table.
Baptism:
We practice believer baptism – that a person makes the choice to follow God’s call rather than the choice being made for them as an infant. Baptism is the basis of membership in the Church and also a mark that every person is called to serve God – the idea of the “priesthood of all believers.” However, all forms of baptism from another Christian denomination are recognized as valid and accepted.
Scripture:
We are called to study and read scripture for ourselves. Rather than having tests of faith and creedal statements, we critically and thoughtfully study scripture, taking into account the history and background – the context – in which it was written and then seek the Spirit's wisdom in finding the ultimate truths of Scripture that transcend all generations and cultures.
The Unity of the Church:
By God's grace and love made known in Jesus Christ, all are called to seek the unity of the church and oneness among all Christians in common witness and service to the world.
The Priesthood of All Believers:
Ordained and commissioned ministers as well as lay person share in the leadership of the church in worship, service and spiritual growth.
A Passion for Justice:
Disciples affirm our need to work with ecumenical and global partners to heal the brokenness of the body of Christ and the human community.
